Condition
The watch remains in good vintage condition with honest signs of wear expected from a timepiece of its age. The original silver dial remains clean and attractive, while the stainless steel case and original bracelet retain their classic appearance. Small scratches are present on the crystal but do not significantly affect legibility. Overall, it presents as a well-preserved example of Seiko’s vintage ladies’ automatic watches.
Notes
Elegant, dependable, and built with the same engineering philosophy found throughout Seiko’s mechanical lineup, this ladies’ automatic demonstrates that Seiko treated its smaller watches as genuine mechanical timepieces rather than simple accessories. The clean silver sunburst dial, integrated bracelet, and balanced proportions create a timeless design that remains easy to wear more than forty years after it was produced.
Powering the watch is Seiko’s in-house Caliber 2206, a compact 17-jewel automatic movement developed specifically for ladies’ watches. Rather than simply shrinking a men’s movement, Seiko engineered an entirely dedicated caliber capable of fitting into smaller cases while maintaining the durability and reliability the brand had become known for. Designing automatic movements at this scale required tighter manufacturing tolerances and greater precision, making calibers like the 2206 an impressive engineering achievement for their time.
Another noteworthy detail is the Kanji and English bilingual day wheel. Watches originally sold in Japan often featured dual-language calendars, allowing owners to display either Japanese Kanji or English day names. Today, collectors often appreciate these bilingual wheels because they preserve the watch’s domestic Japanese heritage.
The movement inside this watch was produced by Daini Seikosha, one of Seiko’s two historic manufacturing companies. During the 1960s and 1970s, Daini Seikosha and Suwa Seikosha operated almost like friendly rivals within Seiko. Both factories designed and manufactured their own movements, constantly pushing each other to improve accuracy, reliability, and production quality. Many collectors believe this internal competition played a significant role in Seiko becoming one of the world’s leading watchmakers. In a way, Seiko had two elite engineering teams competing under the same company name.
