Condition
The watch remains in very good vintage condition and presents beautifully with its original textured gold dial. The gold-plated case retains an elegant appearance with only light signs of wear expected for its age. The replacement leather strap complements the classic dress-watch styling, while the dial remains clean and well preserved. Overall, it is an excellent example of Omega’s early luxury quartz era.
Notes
By the late 1970s, Omega had embraced quartz technology while maintaining the refined aesthetics that made the De Ville collection so successful. Rather than producing futuristic digital displays or oversized cases, Omega focused on creating slim, elegant dress watches powered by highly accurate Swiss quartz movements. This De Ville perfectly captures that philosophy with its understated proportions, beautifully textured gold dial, and timeless minimalist design.
Inside is the Omega Caliber 1350, one of the company’s early in-house Swiss quartz movements. At a time when quartz technology was revolutionizing the watch industry, Omega engineered these movements to meet the same standards of precision and reliability expected from its mechanical watches. They were designed not merely as battery-powered watches, but as luxury timepieces built around cutting-edge technology.
Another distinctive feature is the 20-micron gold plating. The case back is marked “Plaqué Or G 20 Microns,” indicating a considerably thicker layer of gold than found on many ordinary gold-plated watches of the period. Omega used this higher-quality plating on many of its dress models, allowing them to retain their luxurious appearance for decades with proper care.
The watch also features Omega’s push-button adjustment system, a design used on several quartz models of the era. Instead of the conventional pull-out crown, time adjustment is accomplished through a discreet push-button mechanism integrated into the crown assembly. It reflects the innovative engineering Omega explored as quartz technology opened new possibilities for watch design.
Fun Fact
Many collectors think the late 1970s were difficult years for Swiss watchmaking because of the Quartz Crisis—and they certainly were. However, this period also produced some of Omega’s most technically interesting watches. Rather than resisting quartz technology, Omega invested heavily in developing premium quartz calibers that combined Swiss craftsmanship with the accuracy of electronic timekeeping. Today, these early De Ville Quartz models are appreciated not only for their elegant styling but also as important pieces from one of the most transformative periods in watchmaking history.
