Condition

The watch remains in very good vintage condition with light signs of wear consistent with its age. The original dial is clean and well preserved, while the elegant two-tone case retains its classic dress-watch appearance. The crystal remains clear with good visibility, making this an attractive everyday vintage piece. Both the replacement leather strap and the original bracelet are included, allowing the next owner to wear it in either style.

Notes

Simple elegance often ages the best, and this Citizen Quartz is a great example. Its compact rectangular case, understated white dial, and subtle gold accents embody the clean, refined design language that became popular during the 1980s. Unlike many fashion-driven watches of the period, this piece remains timeless and versatile decades later, easily pairing with both casual and formal attire.

One detail that immediately stands out is the case back inscription: “Assembled in F.R. Germany.” During the 1970s and 1980s, several Japanese manufacturers established assembly operations in Europe to better serve the European market while maintaining Japanese movements and quality standards. Watches carrying both Japanese and West German markings are therefore an interesting reminder of how global the watch industry had already become before globalization became commonplace.

Another interesting detail is the 1-jewel quartz movement. Many people assume quartz watches contain no jewels, but that isn’t always true. Citizen often incorporated a jewel bearing into its higher-quality quartz calibers to reduce friction on critical moving parts, improving longevity and reducing wear over decades of use. It’s a small engineering detail that reflects Citizen’s attention to reliability, even in their simpler dress watches.

The words “F.R. Germany” (Federal Republic of Germany) date the watch to before German reunification in October 1990. After reunification, watches were typically marked simply “Germany.” That means this little Citizen isn’t just a Japanese vintage watch—it also carries a small piece of Cold War history on its case back.
