Condition
The watch remains in good vintage condition with light signs of age throughout. Small scratches are present on the crystal, consistent with decades of careful use. The original gold-tone bracelet remains fitted to the watch, while the distinctive burgundy dial has retained its rich color remarkably well, making it one of the more eye-catching examples from the period.
Notes
Among vintage Citizen ladies’ watches, this piece immediately stands out because of its beautiful burgundy dial. While most watches from the era featured silver, champagne, or white dials, colored dials were produced in much smaller numbers and were often reserved for more fashion-oriented collections. Paired with elegant Roman numerals and warm gold-tone accents, the watch has a refined appearance that feels equally inspired by fine jewelry and classic watchmaking.
Inside is a 21-jewel mechanical movement, a reminder that during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Citizen continued to equip many of its ladies’ watches with fully mechanical calibers rather than simplified movements. At the time, producing reliable miniature mechanical movements with this number of jewels required remarkable precision, reflecting the high standard of Japanese watchmaking during the industry’s golden era.
One particularly charming feature is the integrated textured bracelet. Instead of treating the bracelet as a removable accessory, designers blended it seamlessly into the case so the watch appears as a single flowing piece of jewelry. This integrated style became increasingly fashionable during the 1970s and remains highly collectible today because it captures the distinctive design language of the decade.
Fun Fact
During the 1970s, both Citizen and Seiko invested heavily in experimenting with dial colors. Burgundy, emerald green, deep blue, chocolate brown, and even purple appeared in select collections, influenced by interior design, fashion, and automotive color trends of the era. Many of these colored dials were produced in relatively small quantities compared to traditional silver or white versions, making well-preserved examples like this especially enjoyable for collectors who appreciate something a little different.
